How To Hire A Mural Artist FAQ

What information should I have ready before contacting an artist?

  • Dimensions: The height and width of the wall.
  • Surface Type: Is it smooth drywall, rough brick, corrugated metal, or wood?  Does the wall need any repair.
  • Location: Is the wall indoors or outdoors? How high is it from the ground?
  • Theme/Style: Do you have a specific vision.  This can be from your exisiting inspiration images or it can be from images research that is provided by the artist.

Or perhaps you are looking for simply the artist’s own unique signature style?

Developing this vision can be more of a collaboration between both parties,

               if desired.

  • Timeline: When do you need the project completed by?

Q: What should I look for when reviewing a mural painter's portfolio?

A strong portfolio should show a range of work across multiple styles, scales,

and settings. Pay attention to the quality of line work, smooth color

gradients, and how well the mural integrates with its surroundings. Equally important is whether the artist has experience in a style that matches your vision.  Ask for professional references.

A great mural artist will communicate clearly, meet agreed timelines, and treat your space with care. Communications should not feel disorganized or rushed.

How much does a professional mural cost?

Mural pricing is calculated per square foot. Rates generally range from $15 to $45 per square foot.  Highly detailed murals can occasionally be more than $45/sqft.

  • Factors that increase cost: High levels of detail, extensive paint color range, working on heights requiring scaffolding or lifts, and extensive surface preparation (ie.repair damage or aging wall).
  • Factors that decrease cost: Large, simple geometric patterns or murals with significant unpainted areas.

Always ask for a detailed written quote that breaks down design, prep, paint materials, labor, and sealing so you can compare mural cost quotes fairly.

How long does the process take?

A standard mural project usually moves through three phases:

  1. Initial Contact: Initial conversation is an opportunity to understand your

goals, space, color preferences, and budget.

  1. Consultation & Design: 1–3 weeks to create concept sketches to the final approved design.
  2. Logistics & Prep: 1 week (securing permits, equipment, and paint).
  3. Installation: 3–10 days, depending on size and weather (for outdoor works).   A large-scale commercial mural could take several weeks.

Who owns the rights to the artwork once it’s finished?

Under standard copyright law, the artist retains the copyright to the design even after the mural is paid for. This means the client owns the physical mural on their wall, but the artist owns the right to reproduce the image (e.g., on prints or merchandise). If you need full ownership for branding or commercial use, this must be negotiated and written into the contract as a "Work for Hire" or "Copyright Transfer" agreement.

How Many Revisions Do I Get?

Most professional contracts include two rounds of revisions. During the design phase, the artist will present a digital mockup or sketch. You can request tweaks to colors or elements. Significant changes requested after the painting has begun, usually incur "change order" fees.

What are the standard payment terms?

A common industry standard is a 50/50 split:

  • 50% Deposit: Paid upfront to secure the dates and cover design time and materials.
  • 50% Final Payment: Paid immediately upon completion of the mural.
